What to see and do in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia

Harpers Ferry is a historic town in West Virginia in the Shenandoah Valley.

It is situated at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers, where the U.S. states of Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia meet. The lower part of Harpers Ferry is within Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. Two other National Register of Historic Places properties are in the town: the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Potomac River Crossing and St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church. The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal is across the Potomac river from the town. Harpers Ferry is best known for John Brown's raid in 1859, in which he attempted to use the town and the weapons in its Federal Armory (munitions plant) as the base for a slave revolt. The Appalachian Trail passes directly through town.

We visited Harpers Ferry many times. Several times, we climbed to the top of the cliffs at Maryland Heights overlook the town. We also went whitewater rafting and tubing on both the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers.

Today, Harpers Ferry is a popular tourist destination, known for its scenic location, historic charm, and outdoor recreational opportunities. Visitors can explore the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, which includes several historic buildings and museums, as well as hiking trails, river access, and other outdoor activities.

In addition to its historical and recreational offerings, Harpers Ferry is home to a vibrant arts and culture scene, with galleries, shops, and restaurants offering a range of locally-sourced products and experiences. The town is also a hub for outdoor adventure sports, including white water rafting, kayaking, and rock climbing.
