Micanopy, Florida: The Little Town That Time Forgot

Just a short drive south of Gainesville, tucked beneath massive oaks draped in Spanish moss, lies Micanopy — a tiny town with a timeless soul. Known as "The Town That Time Forgot," Micanopy (pronounced mick-a-no-pee) is Florida’s oldest inland settlement, founded in 1821. But it’s more than a historic footnote. We visited Micanoy on 11/05/2023. We walked the downtown area and hiked out on Paynes Prairie to see the wild horses and bison (buffalo) located there.

Micanopy is small — fewer than 700 residents — but its charm is enormous. The town center, officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places, looks like a movie set (and it has been one; Doc Hollywood was filmed here in 1991). Red-brick sidewalks, weathered storefronts, and front porches invite you to slow down.

Take a walk down Cholokka Boulevard, the main drag, and you’ll find antique stores, old general stores converted into cafés, and locally owned shops selling everything from vintage books to handmade crafts. No big brands. No franchises. Just character.

A Haven for Antiques and Art

Micanopy is often called an antique lover’s paradise. People come from across the state to dig through curated collections of vintage furniture, rare books, and collectibles.
