Washington, D.C. is the capital city of the United States of America.

It is located on the east coast of the country, between the states of Maryland and Virginia. The city is named after the first President of the United States, George Washington, and the "D.C." in its name stands for "District of Columbia".

The U.S. Constitution provided for a federal district under the exclusive jurisdiction of the U.S. Congress, and the District is therefore not a part of any U.S. state. The states of Maryland and Virginia each donated land to form the federal district. The signing of the Residence Act on July 16, 1790, created the capital district located along the Potomac River.

We visited the capitol often during the 10 years that we lived in Maryland.

Washington, D.C. is a major political and cultural center, home to numerous national landmarks and institutions. Some of the most famous sites in the city include the White House (the official residence of the President of the United States), the U.S. Capitol Building (home to the U.S. Congress), the Supreme Court of the United States, and the Washington Monument.

The city also has a thriving cultural scene, with numerous museums, galleries, and performing arts venues. Some of the most well-known museums include the Smithsonian Institution, which includes a group of 19 museums and galleries throughout the city, and the National Gallery of Art, which houses a large collection of Western art.

Washington, D.C. is also known for its diverse population and vibrant neighborhoods. Some of the most popular neighborhoods for visitors include Georgetown, known for its charming streets and historic architecture, and Dupont Circle, known for its lively nightlife and diverse dining options.

Overall, Washington, D.C. is a city with a rich history, a vibrant culture, and a central role in the political and social life of the United States.
