What to see and do at La Fortuna, Costa Rica

La Fortuna is a small town in Costa Rica known for its proximity to the Arenal Volcano.

Arenal is the youngest and one of the most active volcanoes in Costa Rica. Scientists have been able to date its activity back to more than 7,000 years ago. It last erupted in 2010.  

From 8/21/2016 to 8/22/2016, we spent two nights at the Arenal Springs Resort at the base of the 5,436 ft Aernal Volcano. At the resort, we were able to swim in the hot springs from the volcano. 

The Areneal Hanging Bridges Park is nearby.  The hanging bridges trail is 2 miles long, where you cross fourteen bridges (8 stationary and 6 suspension), going from 26 to 322 ft length and up to 200 ft high. In the park we saw howler monkeys, a fluer de lance poisonous snake, and lots of birds.

In addition to the volcano. La Fortuna also has numerous hot springs, and adventure activities like hiking, ziplining, and white water rafting. It's a popular tourist destination with a range of accommodations, restaurants, and tour operators. The area also has several nature reserves and national parks with abundant wildlife and beautiful landscapes.
