What to see and do at Mount Mitchell, North Carolina

Mount Mitchell, North Carolina is the highest peak in eastern North America

It has an elevation of 6,684 feet. It is located in North Carolina in the Black Mountain range about 35 miles northeast of Asheville on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

We have been to Mount Mitchell several times and last visited it on 10/22/2017.  

Mount Mitchell is named after Elisha Mitchell, a professor at the University of North Carolina who determined its height in the mid-19th century. Mitchell fell to his death on the mountain in 1857 while trying to verify his measurements.

Today, Mount Mitchell is part of Mount Mitchell State Park and is a popular destination for hiking and sightseeing. The park offers a variety of hiking trails, including the challenging Mount Mitchell Trail, which leads to the summit of the mountain. From the top, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

The summit of Mount Mitchell is also home to a museum, a gift shop, and a restaurant. The museum provides information about the ecology and geology of the mountain, as well as its history and cultural significance. The gift shop sells souvenirs and outdoor gear, and the restaurant serves meals and snacks, including the famous Mount Mitchell Summit Cheeseburger.
