Punda was established in 1634, when the Dutch captured the island from Spain. Otrobanda ("the other side"), which was founded in 1707, is the newer section of the city and is considered to be the cultural centre of Willemstad. The two parts of the city are connected by Queen Emma Bridge, a long pontoon bridge.

It is one of the oldest towns on the island and is known for its coffee production, which has been a major part of the town's economy for centuries. It was founded in 1756 and it was one of the original nine towns established by the Spanish in Puerto Rico. The indigenous Taíno called the area coayuco, meaning "yucca plantation." The Taino natives considered the area of Yauco the capital of Boriken (the Taíno name for "Puerto Rico").
