Visited September 2005
Corsica is a very large mountainous island in the Mediterranean Sea located southeast of France and west of Italy. It is a region of France and the island's capital is Ajaccio. It contains a mix of stylish coastal towns, dense forest and craggy peaks. The highest peak at 8,878 ft. In 238 BC it was a province of the Roman Republic. It's been part of France since 1768, but retains a distinct Italian culture. Napoleon was born in Corsica and exiled here after his fall from power.
