Things to see and do in Tampa, Florida
Tampa, Florida: Big City Energy with Coastal Cool
Tampa doesn’t beg for attention—it earns it. Located on Florida’s Gulf Coast, Tampa has transformed from a gritty port city into one of the most exciting, fast-growing metros in the state. It’s got the energy of a big city, the vibe of a beach town, and a blend of cultures that makes it feel authentic and alive.
We live in a suburb of Tampa and visit it often. There is so much to see and do here.
Let’s start with the basics: Tampa is booming. Fueled by an influx of new residents, a rise in tech and finance jobs, and a constant stream of construction cranes, the city is growing fast—but not losing its soul in the process. It still holds tight to its Cuban, Spanish, and Italian roots, especially in Ybor City, the historic district that once powered the cigar industry and now delivers nightlife, food, and flavor 24/7.
Ybor is where Tampa’s past and present collide. You’ll find old brick buildings, iron balconies, and the smell of hand-rolled cigars in the air. Roosters wander the streets, a throwback to the city’s early days. But the district isn’t stuck in time—it's filled with bars, clubs, coffee shops, and tattoo parlors that cater to a younger, creative crowd.
Downtown Tampa has undergone a serious glow-up in the last decade. The Tampa Riverwalk, a scenic, pedestrian-friendly path along the Hillsborough River, has become the city’s social backbone. It connects parks, restaurants, museums, and event venues. Locals bike, jog, or just hang out with skyline views and waterfront breezes. It’s also home to major attractions like Busch Gardens, The Florida Aquarium, Glazer Children’s Museum, Zoo Tampa, Raymond James Stadium, Florida State Fairgrounds, and Amalie Arena, where the Tampa Bay Lightning dominate the NHL.
Port Tampa Bay is a popular embarkation site for cruises to the Bahamas, Western Caribbean, and Mexico. Six major cruise lines sail out of the port.
Speaking of sports, Tampa punches way above its weight. In the last few years alone, it’s earned the nickname “Champa Bay” thanks to championship wins by the Rays in baseball, Lightning in hockey, Buccaneers in football and Rowdies in soccer. These teams and baseball spring training games in nearby towns, make the Tampa area a full-year sports destination.
But Tampa isn’t all stadiums and skyscrapers. It’s also a city that knows how to chill. You’re never far from the water—Boating, paddleboarding, and sunset cruises are part of daily life. A short drive away, you’ve got white-sand beaches in Clearwater and St. Pete, both consistently ranked among the best in the country.
Food in Tampa is another standout. This city takes its Cuban sandwiches seriously (ask five locals where to get the best one, and you’ll get five passionate answers). But beyond that, Tampa’s culinary scene is exploding with everything from high-end steakhouses to hole-in-the-wall taco joints. The city’s food halls—like Armature Works—offer a curated taste of it all in one stylish spot.
What makes Tampa truly special is its mix. It’s Southern and coastal, historic and modern, laid-back and driven. It has just enough edge to keep things interesting and just enough polish to feel upscale.
Tampa isn’t trying to be Miami. It’s carving out its own identity—smart, bold, and on the rise. Whether you’re moving here or just passing through, it’s a city that makes you pay attention—and maybe even consider staying.
