The Tunnel of Guajataca is a historic Caribbean railroad tunnel in Puerto Rico

It is located in the municipality of Isabela, on the northwest coast of Puerto Rico. This railroad tunnel connected the town of Isabela with the town of Quebradillas.

The tunnel is open to the public and we have visited it several times. if you walk through the tunnel, it takes you to Guajataca beach. It is known for its large boulders, raging surf, and dangerous turbulent waters.

We visited the tunnel several times including 12/26/2005 and most recently on 3/5/2025.

The American Railroad Co. of Puerto Rico began construction of the tunnel around 1904 during the expansion of the northern line towards the west of the island. The tunnel is one of the most significant work of the remnants of the national railway system that connected the island during the first half of the 1900's.

Today, the Tunnel of Guajataca is a popular tourist attraction, known for its scenic beauty and unique engineering. Visitors can hike or bike through the tunnel. The tunnel is also home to a variety of flora and fauna, including bats, lizards, and various plant species.

The Tunnel of Guajataca is a testament to the ingenuity and resilience of Puerto Rico's people and their efforts to develop the island's resources. It is a significant landmark in Puerto Rico's history and a must-visit attraction for anyone interested in the island's culture and natural beauty.

The Cara del Indio Mabodamaca sculpture is located on highway 2 just west of Tunel Guajacaca.
