What to see and do in Vigo, Spain

The Port of Vigo in Spain is reportedly the biggest fishing port in the world.

Vigo is a city in the northwest of Spain, located in the province of Pontevedra in the Galicia region. It is a port city on the Atlantic coast and is known for its rich history and cultural heritage. The area around it is mountainous.  In 1585 and 1589, Francis Drake raided the city and temporarily occupied it, burning many buildings. Several decades later a Turkish fleet tried to attack the city. As a result, the city's walls were built in 1656. 

On 9/25/2007, we visited Vigo. From the port, we traveled by bus thru the city to visit Santiago de Campostela.

Vigo has a long history that dates back to ancient times, and it has been inhabited by several different civilizations, including the Celts and the Romans. During the Middle Ages, the city was an important center of commerce and was a major port for the export of iron and other products from the region.

Today, Vigo is a modern and dynamic city that is known for its excellent seafood, beautiful beaches, and lively nightlife. It is also home to several cultural landmarks and monuments, including the Gothic-style Vigo Cathedral and the Castle of San Sebastián, which offers stunning views of the city and the surrounding countryside.
