Barbados is a small island nation in the Caribbean, but don’t let its size fool you—it has a rich history, stunning landscapes, and a vibrant culture that make it a top travel destination. A Brief History

Barbados was first inhabited by the Arawaks and Caribs, indigenous peoples who lived off the land and sea. The island was later colonized by the British in 1627 and remained under British rule until it gained independence in 1966. This colonial history has shaped the island’s culture, which blends African, British, and Caribbean influences.

We visited Barbados on 2/3/2025. We spent the night at the Raddison Aquatica Resort. While there we walked around the area. The next day we went to the Bridgetown Harbor Cruise terminal for our cruise of the Eastern Caribbean. We returned to Barbados on 2/14/2025 and flew home from here.

Beyond its beaches, Barbados has lush landscapes worth exploring. Harrison’s Cave, a network of limestone caverns with flowing streams and towering stalactites, is a must-see. For nature lovers, the Andromeda Botanic Gardens showcase the island’s diverse plant life, and the Barbados Wildlife Reserve provides the chance to see green monkeys up close.

Culture and Cuisine

Barbados is often referred to as the "Birthplace of Rum," and visiting a local distillery, such as Mount Gay, is a great way to learn about the island’s deep connection to the spirit. Bajan cuisine is another highlight, with dishes like flying fish and cou-cou (the national dish), macaroni pie, and pudding and souse providing a flavorful introduction to local flavors. Street food lovers should try fish cutters at a beachside stall or visit Oistins Fish Fry for a lively Friday night seafood feast.

Music and dance are integral to Bajan culture. Soca and calypso beats fill the air during the island’s biggest festival, Crop Over, which marks the end of the sugar cane harvest. This vibrant celebration features parades, elaborate costumes, and nonstop partying, attracting visitors from around the world.

Adventure and Activities

For those who crave adventure, Barbados offers plenty of activities. Snorkeling and scuba diving in Carlisle Bay allow visitors to explore shipwrecks and vibrant coral reefs. Animal Flower Cave in the north offers dramatic ocean views and sea caves perfect for exploration.
