Breckenridge, Colorado: A Year-Round Mountain Destination in the Heart of the Rockies
Breckenridge, Colorado is one of the most popular mountain towns in the United States. Located in Summit County at the base of the Tenmile Range, Breckenridge blends world-class skiing, historic charm, and outdoor adventure into one unforgettable destination. Whether you’re planning a winter ski trip or a summer mountain escape, Breckenridge offers activities, scenery, and culture in every season.
We visited Breckenridge with our kids and grandkids for the week of 2/16/2026 staying in a rental home. While there the kids and grandkids went skiing and snowboarding. We planned to go snowmobiling but there was not enough snow on the ground, so we went ATV riding instead.
World-Class Skiing at Breckenridge Ski Resort
Breckenridge is best known for Breckenridge Ski Resort, one of Colorado’s premier ski destinations. Spanning five peaks and nearly 3,000 acres of terrain, the resort offers runs for beginners, intermediate skiers, and advanced riders alike. High-alpine bowls and scenic chairlift rides provide breathtaking views of the Rocky Mountains.
In winter, visitors can enjoy:
- Skiing and snowboarding
- Snowshoeing and Nordic skiing

- Après-ski dining and nightlife
- Visiting the Ice Castle
Breckenridge’s high elevation ensures reliable snowfall and a long ski season, typically running from November through April.
A Historic Mountain Town
Beyond the slopes, Breckenridge features one of the most charming historic downtown areas in Colorado. Founded during the 1859 Gold Rush, the town still showcases colorful Victorian buildings, preserved storefronts, and a walkable Main Street.
Visitors can explore the Breckenridge Historic District, browse art galleries, shop at locally owned boutiques, and dine at a wide variety of restaurants. The town balances its mining heritage with modern mountain culture, creating a unique atmosphere that feels both authentic and lively.
