The Guánica harbor on the southern coast of Puerto Rico is a tropical fjord

Guanica is a municipality located on the southern coast of Puerto Rico. The Guánica harbor on the Caribbean Sea resembles a tropical fjord, narrow and bordered by rugged hills, barely a quarter-mile wide, but about two miles from mouth to the town. The Guánica State Forest (Bosque Estatal de Guánica) is a small dry forest reserve east and west of the town, the largest remaining tract of tropical dry coastal forest in the world, and designated an international Biosphere Reserve in 1981.

This is a place that we enjoy visiting and have been here many times. most recently on 7/24/2021. There are high hills on each side of the mouth of the harbor. The 450-foot hill to the east of town, itself topped by the tiny Fort Caprón. There are great views of the harbor from the trail leading up to the fort. A few rock slides from the 2020 earthquake partially block the trail in places.

Another popular spot in Guanica is the Gilligan's Island, a small island located off the coast that is only accessible by boat. The island features crystal clear waters and coral reefs, making it a great spot for snorkeling and swimming. The Guanica lighthouse was built in 1893 and is still in operation today.

Juan Ponce de Leon landed in the Guánica harbor on August 12, 1508. On July 25, 1898, American forces landed in Guánica to initiate the invasion of Puerto Rico in the Spanish–American War.

Overall, Guanica is a great destination for those who love nature, history, and culture. Its beautiful beaches, natural reserves, and historic sites offer something for everyone.
