What to see and do in Lares, Puerto Rico
Lares played a pivotal role in Puerto Rico's struggle for independence from Spain
Lares is a town located in the central region of Puerto Rico. It is known for its rich history, natural beauty, and cultural heritage. The town is situated at 3,900 ft above sea level in the Caribbean mountains, surrounded by lush vegetation and stunning landscapes.
Lares was founded in 1827 and played a pivotal role in the island's struggle for independence from Spain in the 19th century. The town's main square, Plaza de la Revolución, is named in honor of the revolutionaries who fought for Puerto Rico's liberation. Today, the square is a popular gathering spot for locals and visitors, with a statue of Puerto Rican patriot Ramón Emeterio Betances as its centerpiece.
On 10/4/2019, we visited the Mirador Mariana Bracetti park which is a great place from which to view the town and the surrounding mountains. Along the highway between Lares and San Sebastain, we visited the Salto Collazo waterfall. It is located right next to the road and parking there is very limited.
The town's historic district features a number of well-preserved buildings, including the Casa Museo de Lares, which was once the home of Betances and is now a museum showcasing the town's revolutionary history. Other notable landmarks in Lares include the Parroquia San José, a beautiful 19th-century church with a striking white facade and a bell tower that offers panoramic views of the surrounding area.
Lares also has a number of scenic spots that are popular with hikers and outdoor enthusiasts. One of the most popular attractions is the Toro Negro Forest Reserve, which covers more than 7,000 acres and features hiking trails, waterfalls, and stunning views of the Caribbean Sea. Other notable natural attractions in the area include the Guajataca Forest Reserve, which features caves, waterfalls, and a unique limestone formation known as the "Tunnel of Love."
In addition to its history and natural beauty, Lares is also known for its vibrant culture, with a number of festivals and events that celebrate the town's traditions and customs. The annual Fiestas de la Calle San Sebastián, held in January, is one of the most popular festivals in the Caribbean and features live music, food, and colorful parades.
