San Juan de Puerto Rico is the third oldest European-established capital city in the Americas.

In 1508, Juan Ponce de León founded Caparra. A year later, the settlement was moved and renamed Puerto Rico, Spanish for "rich port". In 1521, the newer settlement was given its formal name: Puerto Rico de San Juan. The most notable historical buildings are located in San Juan are the city's defensive forts (Fort San Felipe del Morro and Fort San Cristóbal) and La Fortaleza, the oldest executive mansion in continuous use in the Americas.

Maribel was born and grew up in Puerto Rico and we have been traveling there often since we met in 1980. Our most recent visit was on 3/7/2025.

San Juan is the capital and largest city of Puerto Rico, an unincorporated territory of the United States. It is located on the northeastern coast of the island and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Caribbean.

The city has a rich history, dating back to the 16th century when it was founded by Spanish conquistador Juan Ponce de León. Today, San Juan is a modern, cosmopolitan city with a vibrant culture and a mix of old and new architecture.

Some of the must-see attractions in San Juan include the historic Old San Juan neighborhood, which features colonial-era buildings, cobblestone streets, and beautiful plazas. The city is also home to several historic fortifications, including El Morro and San Cristobal, both of which offer stunning views of the city and the ocean.
