Urubamba, Peru: The Heart of the Sacred Valley of the Incas
Nestled in the lush Sacred Valley of the Incas, surrounded by towering Andean peaks and fertile farmland, Urubamba, Peru, is a serene and scenic town that captures the essence of the Peruvian highlands. Known as the “Pearl of the Vilcanota River,” Urubamba blends natural beauty, traditional culture, and easy access to some of the most iconic archaeological sites in Peru.
Whether you’re exploring the nearby ruins of Ollantaytambo, preparing for your journey to Machu Picchu, or simply seeking a peaceful escape from Cusco’s bustle, Urubamba is the perfect base to experience the Sacred Valley’s charm.
We spent two nights in Urubamba (from 10/17/2025 to 10/19/2025) at the Hotel Mabey Urbans while we visited Machu Pichu and the Sacred Valley. We also walked around the town and visited the market and town square.
The Gateway to the Sacred Valley
Located about one hour northwest of Cusco, Urubamba sits at a lower altitude — around 2,870 meters (9,416 feet) — making it an ideal stop for travelers acclimating before visiting Machu Picchu or higher-altitude areas. Its mild climate, fertile soil, and stunning landscapes have made Urubamba one of the most important agricultural centers since Inca times.
The town lies along the Vilcanota River (Urubamba River), which winds through the valley, nourishing fields of corn, quinoa, and potatoes — crops that have sustained Andean civilizations for thousands of years.
