What to see and do in Ushuaia, Argentina
Ushuaia, Argentina is the world's southernmost city
Ushuaia is located below the 54th parallel south latitude making it the world's southernmost city. It is located in a wide bay on the southern coast of Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego, with the Martial mountains to the north and the Beagle Channel to the south.
We visited Uhsuaia on 1/27/2024. While there, we took a bus tour to the Tierra del Fuego National Park and then walked around the city,
The city was originally named by early British missionaries using the native name for the area. Ushuaia comes from the Yaghan language words ush and waia and means deep bay. The first house was constructed in Ushuaia in 1870 for Reverend Thomas Bridges. One room was for the Bridges family, a second was for a Yámana married couple, while the third served as the chapel.
In 1873 Julio Argentino Roca, who later served as the Argentine President, established a penal colony in Ushuaia in an effort to help firmly establish Argentine sovereignty over all of Tierra del Fuego.
Area tourist attractions include the Tierra del Fuego National Park and Lapataia Bay. The park can be reached by highway, or via the End of the World Train (Tren del Fin del Mundo) from Ushuaia. Cerro Castor is locate in Uahuaia and it is the southernmost ski resort in the world. Penguins and seals can be seen on the islands in the Beagle Channel near Ushuaia.
