El Yunque National Forest is a tropical Caribbean rainforest in northeastern Puerto Rico

NOTE: The park opens at 8:00 am each day and parking is very limited. The La Mina Falls trail is temporarily closed.

The highest mountain peak in the forest rises 3,494 ft above sea level. Over 20 feet of rain a year falls in some areas of the forest. From El Portal Visitor Center, a walkway winds through the surrounding treetops. Trails run to La Mina waterfall and Mount Britton, then up to the high-altitude dwarf forest.

We have visited the El Yunque National Forest may times including visits on 10/30/2006, 7/24/2015, and 7/15/2022. On three of these visits we hiked to Mount Britton tower. We have also hiked the La Mina Falls trail several times.

The El Yunque Caribbean Rainforest is a unique and diverse ecosystem that is home to an incredible array of flora and fauna. The forest features over 240 species of trees, including towering ceiba trees, colorful flamboyant trees, and various species of palms, as well as countless species of ferns, bromeliads, orchids, and other plants. The forest floor is also teeming with life, with many species of insects, amphibians, and reptiles, including the iconic Puerto Rican Coqui frog, a symbol of the island's culture and natural heritage.

The forest is also home to a variety of bird species, including the critically endangered Puerto Rican parrot, the endemic Puerto Rican Tody, and the Antillean Mango hummingbird. Visitors may also spot small mammals such as bats, agoutis, and mongooses.

The El Yunque Rainforest is a popular destination for hikers, nature enthusiasts, and birdwatchers. The forest is home to several hiking trails that range from easy walks to challenging treks, including the popular La Mina Falls trail, which leads to a stunning waterfall and natural swimming pool.
