What to see and do in the Highlands, Scotland

The Scottish Highlands is a rugged and sparsely populated region in the northwest of Scotland 

There are many mountain ranges dominating the region. It is known for its beautiful and diverse landscape, including mountains, lochs, glens, and forests.

We visited the Scottish Highlands on 6/10/2022. After traveling along the shore of Loch Ness, we drove up into the Highlands passing numerous farms and villages located there.

The area is rich in history, with evidence of human settlement dating back thousands of years. The major social unit of the Highlands was the clan. Scottish kings saw the clans as a challenge to their authority and the Highlands was seen by many as a lawless region. It was the site of numerous battles between the Scottish clans and the English, particularly during the Jacobite rebellions of the 18th century.

Today, the Scottish Highlands is a popular destination for outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling, fishing, and skiing. The region is home to some of Scotland's most iconic landmarks, such as Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the British Isles, and Loch Ness, famous for its mythical monster. The Highlands are also home to a unique culture, with its own language (Gaelic) and traditional music and dance. Visitors can explore this culture by visiting local festivals, Highland games, and museums.

Overall, the Scottish Highlands offer a unique and beautiful experience for those seeking adventure and natural beauty, as well as those interested in Scottish history and culture.
