What to see and do in Inverness, Scotland
Inverness is a city in the Scottish Highlands on Scotland’s northeast coast
It is located where the River Ness meets the Moray Firth. It's the largest city and the cultural capital of the Scottish Highlands. The River Ness flows into the city from the famous Loch Ness, home of the legendary Loch Ness Monster.
We visited Inverness on 6/10/2022. While there, we drove around the city to view some of its notable sites. We then traveled to Loch Ness and visited the Scottish Highlands.
Inverness has a rich and colorful history, dating back to the 6th century when it was founded as a Pictish stronghold. Over the centuries, it has been the site of battles and sieges, including the famous Battle of Culloden in 1746, which saw the defeat of Bonnie Prince Charlie's Jacobite forces by the British army.
Today, Inverness is a popular tourist destination, known for its stunning natural beauty, historic landmarks, and vibrant cultural scene. Its Old Town features 19th-century Inverness Cathedral, the mostly 18th-century Old High Church. Visitors can explore the city's many museums and galleries, including the Inverness Museum and Art Gallery, or take a stroll through the city's picturesque Victorian market.
Inverness is also a great base for exploring the surrounding area, including the Cairngorms National Park, the Black Isle, and of course, Loch Ness. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy hiking, biking, and skiing in the nearby hills and mountains, while water sports and fishing are popular on the River Ness and nearby lochs.
