What to see and do in La Romana, Dominican Republic

La Romana is home to several beautiful beaches, including Bayahibe, Dominicus, and Casa de Campo

La Romana is a city located in the southeastern region of the Dominican Republic. It is the third largest city in the country. It  was founded in 1897 as an oil town. After 1917 with the construction of a large sugar-mill, the economy quickly shifted to sugar production. Casa de Campo is a large resort located nearby.

We visited La Romana on ​10/8/2013 and walked through the city.

The city was founded in the late 19th century and has a rich history, with influences from Spanish and African cultures. Today, La Romana is a thriving economic center, known for its sugar production, tourism, and other industries such as textiles and tobacco.

Tourism is one of the main drivers of the economy in La Romana. There are also several tourist attractions in the area, including the Altos de Chavón, an artistic center modeled after a 16th-century Mediterranean village, and the Parque Nacional del Este, a national park that covers over 20,000 hectares and is home to a diverse range of plant and animal species.

In addition to its attractions, La Romana is also known for its cuisine, which features a mix of Spanish, African, and indigenous Taíno influences. Some of the most popular dishes include "sancocho," a hearty stew made with meat, vegetables, and spices, and "habichuelas con dulce," a sweet bean dish often served as a dessert.

Overall, La Romana is a dynamic and culturally rich city, offering visitors a unique blend of history, beauty, and modern amenities.
