What to see and do in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo is the capital of the Dominican Republic and one of the oldest cities in the Caribbean

 It was founded by Bartholomew Columbus in 1496 and became the first permanent European settlement in the New World. It is located on the southeast coast of the island of Hispaniola, which it shares with Haiti. Santo Domingo has a rich history and cultural heritage, dating back to the time when it was founded. The walled, cobblestoned historic core of the city, the Zona Colonial, has buildings that date to the 1500s, including the cathedral, which was the first built in the New World.

We visited Santo Domingo on 10/8/2013 and spent two nights in the city.

The city is known for its well-preserved colonial architecture, including the Alcazar de Colón, a palace built for Christopher Columbus's son Diego, which now serves as a museum. The Zona Colonial, the historic district of Santo Domingo, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is home to many other important buildings and monuments, such as the Cathedral of Santa Maria la Menor, the oldest cathedral in the New World.

In addition to its historical significance, Santo Domingo is also a thriving modern city with a vibrant cultural scene, including music, dance, art, and cuisine. It is a major center for business, finance, and commerce in the Caribbean, and it is also a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors from around the world with its beaches, nightlife, and entertainment options.
