What to see and do in Salcedo, Dominican Republic

Salcedo is known for its rich cultural heritage and historic sites, as well as its beautiful landscapes and scenic views.

Salcedo is a town in the Central region of the Dominican Republic. It is located in the province of Hermanas Mirabal and is the capital of the Salcedo municipality. 

Salcedo is the birthplace of the Dominican heroines, the Mirabal sisters, who died in the struggle against the dictator Rafael Trujillo. A museum in the town commemorates three of sisters. While visiting there on ​10/7/2013, we had the opportunity to meet and spent time speaking with the remaining sister, Bélgica (Dedé) Mirabal. She died on February 1, 2014.

The town is surrounded by mountains, making it a popular destination for hiking and outdoor activities. There are also several parks and nature reserves in the area, including the Los Haitises National Park, which is known for its lush vegetation and diverse wildlife.

Salcedo is also known for its colonial architecture, which can be seen in the town's well-preserved churches and other historic buildings. Additionally, the town is home to several museums, including the Museo de la Catedral de Salcedo, which showcases the history of the town's cathedral.

Aside from its cultural and natural attractions, Salcedo is also a hub of economic activity, with a vibrant agricultural sector and numerous small businesses. The town is also known for its delicious cuisine, including traditional dishes like "sancocho," a hearty stew made with meat, vegetables, and spices.
