What to see and do in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic

Puerto Plata is a city located on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic

It is in the province of Puerto Plata and is known for its stunning beaches, historic landmarks, and vibrant culture.

On ​10/6/2013, we visited Puerto Plata. After visiting the Fortaleza San Felipe which was built in 1577,  we rode up the aerial tramway in Puerto Plata to the Pico Isabel de Torres, a 2,600-foot high mountain within the city.  

One of the main attractions in Puerto Plata is its beautiful beaches, such as Playa Dorada, Sosúa Beach, and Long Beach. These beaches offer a variety of water activities, including swimming, snorkeling, and windsurfing.

The city also has a rich history and is home to several colonial-style buildings, such as the San Felipe Fortress, which was built in the 16th century to defend against pirate attacks, and the Amber Museum, which showcases the Dominican Republic's rich amber deposits.

In addition to its natural beauty and history, Puerto Plata is also known for its lively nightlife, with a variety of bars, clubs, and restaurants offering live music, delicious food, and drinks. The city also features local street markets, where visitors can shop for souvenirs and experience the local culture.
