What to see and do at the Las Tinajas Waterfall, Puerto Rico

Las Tinajas Waterfall in Puerto Rico is a popular spot for jumping into the river at the base of the falls

Las Tinajas Falls is located on the western edge of the El Yunque National Forest, approximately a 20-minute drive southwest of Fajardo, Puerto Rico in the Caribbean.

To get to the falls, take highway 976 south from Fajardo.  You will then turn right onto a narrow road. On the right side of the road, you will see a small waterfall called Charco Frio. If you continue down the road, you will see a parking area down by the river.  The hike from the parking area to the falls includes multiple stream crossings and climbs up steep muddy slopes. 

If you continue past the parking area to the end of the road, you may be able to park there for a fee.  The path from here is a bit shorter and less strenuous.

The two trails merge together just past the end of the road.   When you reach the falls, the trail descends steeply down to the river.  Once you get to the river you will enter a large natural swimming area at the base of the falls.  There are multiple natural rock platforms and a rope swing that are popular for jumping into the river at the base of the falls.  Up river from the falls are natural water slides in the river.

We did the hike on our own on 4/11/2024.  But, if you are not an experienced hiker, I would strongly recommend using a local guide for this adventure.
