Merzouga is best known for the Erg Chebbi, a large sand dune field in the Sahara desert region of Morocco

Merzouga is a small desert town located in the southeastern region of Morocco, near the border with Algeria. The Erg Chebbi in the Sahara desert is one of the most famous tourist destinations in Morocco. The sand dunes rise up to 450 feet high and stretch for over 24 miles, providing a unique and stunning landscape that attracts visitors from all over the world.

We visited Merzouga from 4/14/2012 to 4/16/2012.  The first day, we traveled by camel into the Sahara desert to spend the night at an oasis in the desert.  The next day after watching the sunrise and having breakfast, we returned to the hotel at the edge of the desert.  We then had a guide in a 4 x 4 take us to visit a Berber family living in the desert.  They invited us in to their tent for bread and tea.

Tourism is the main industry in Merzouga, and many visitors come to take part in camel treks and overnight camping trips into the dunes. The town also offers a range of other activities and attractions, including quad biking, hot air balloon rides, and cultural tours of local villages and kasbahs.

Aside from its natural beauty, Merzouga is also known for its rich cultural heritage and history. The area has been inhabited for thousands of years, and evidence of this can be seen in the numerous prehistoric rock paintings and engravings that can be found in the nearby Tafilalt oasis. Today, Merzouga is home to a vibrant and friendly Berber community, who are known for their hospitality and traditional way of life.

Overall, Merzouga is a must-visit destination for anyone looking to experience the beauty and culture of Morocco's desert region. Whether you are interested in adventure sports, cultural tours, or simply relaxing in the warm sunshine, there is something for everyone in this charming and unique town.
