What to see and do in Mijas, Spain

Mijas, Spain is located on a mountainside where the whitewashed houses stand out against the evergreen trees and tan rock. 

Mijas is a town and municipality in the province of Málaga, in the autonomous community of Andalusia, Spain. It is located near the coast of the Costa del Sol, about 12 miles west of Málaga city and is 1,476 feet above sea level . 

 After arriving here by bus from Malaga on 9/29/2007, we walked the streets of the town and visited the bull fighting arena and the old church.

Mijas is known for its picturesque white-washed buildings and cobbled streets, making it a popular tourist destination. It is often referred to as a "typical Andalusian village," and it is known for its beautiful views of the Mediterranean Sea and the surrounding mountains.

 Mijas was founded in prehistoric times by the Tartessians and the remains of the original fortification are still visible on parts of the exterior wall of the city. The area's minerals attracted ancient Greeks, Phoenicians, Romans and Moors to the village. 

The town is also famous for its festivals, such as the Feria de Mijas, which is held annually in August and is a celebration of the town's culture and heritage. The feria includes traditional music, dance, and food, as well as bullfighting, rodeos, and other festivities.

In addition to its cultural heritage, Mijas is also known for its excellent golf courses, making it a popular destination for golf enthusiasts. The town is surrounded by numerous beaches, including La Cala, which is considered one of the best on the Costa del Sol.
