Phoenix is the capital of Arizona, and it lies at the north end of the Sonora desert

Phoenix lies along the Salt River in the south-central part of the state. The city sits in the Valley of the Sun which is surrounded by old volcanic peaks to the north and east. It is dotted with small volcanic mountains including Camelback, Squaw Peak, and South Mountain. These mountains reach elevations of about 2,600 ft.

I have visited Phoenix several times. On this trip on 3/4/2011, I stayed at the Arizona Grand Resort & Spa which is at the east end of South Mountain. I hiked up South Mountain

Phoenix was founded in 1861 as an agricultural community near the Salt River. The city grew rapidly after World War II, and today it is a major economic and cultural center in the Southwest. It is known for its vibrant arts and culture scene, with numerous museums, art galleries, and performing arts venues. The city is home to the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra, the Phoenix Art Museum, and the Heard Museum, which showcases the art and culture of Native American tribes in the Southwest.

There are many attractions to see and do in Phoenix, including the Phoenix Zoo, the Desert Botanical Garden, and the South Mountain Park and Preserve. The city is also a gateway to outdoor recreation, with nearby hiking, camping, and water sports opportunities.

Overall, Phoenix is a dynamic and growing city with a rich history, vibrant culture, and a lot to offer both residents and visitors.
