Washington Oaks Gardens State Park: Nature, History, and Unmatched Coastal Beauty

Tucked between the Atlantic Ocean and the Matanzas River in Palm Coast, Florida, Washington Oaks Gardens State Park is one of the state’s most scenic and serene hidden gems. We visited here on 03/22/2025. We walked the trails in the park and then drove out to the ocean shore to see the beach and coquina rock formations.

At just over 400 acres, Washington Oaks isn’t a massive park—but what it lacks in size, it more than makes up for in beauty and variety. It’s best known for its formal gardens, a stunning and rare feature in a Florida state park. Picture brick pathways, reflective pools, rose gardens, and shady spots beneath centuries-old live oaks draped in Spanish moss. It’s peaceful, romantic, and almost cinematic—perfect for photography, picnics, or simply wandering.

These gardens are the legacy of Louise and Owen D. Young, who purchased the land in the 1930s and named the property after Louise’s family, descendants of George Washington. In 1965, Louise donated the estate to the state of Florida, asking that the gardens be preserved for public enjoyment. That spirit of care and tranquility still defines the park today.

But there’s a wild side to Washington Oaks, too. Just across A1A, on the east side of the park, you’ll find one of the most unique beaches in Florida. Instead of wide, flat stretches of sand, the shoreline here is dotted with coquina rock formations—jagged, porous limestone made from ancient shell and coral deposits. When the tide is right, the rocks create pools, channels, and dramatic scenery unlike any other beach in the state. It's a favorite spot for photographers, shell seekers, and anyone wanting a more rugged coastal experience.

Back on the riverside, the park offers hiking and biking trails through coastal hammock forests and along the Matanzas River. Wildlife is abundant, especially birds—expect to see ospreys, herons, egrets, and maybe even a gopher tortoise or two. There are also shaded picnic areas and a visitor center with exhibits on the park’s history, flora, and fauna.

Washington Oaks isn’t flashy, and that’s what makes it special. It offers a rare combination: formal gardens that feel like a European estate, a beach that looks like a sci-fi movie set, and natural Florida trails that stay true to the state’s wilder side. It's a place where you can go from quiet reflection under an oak tree to scrambling across coquina rocks in the same afternoon.
