Cozumel is a Caribbean island located off the east coast of Mexico.

The island was sacred to Ix Chel, the Maya Moon Goddess, and temples here were a place of pilgrimage. The Spanish explorers first arrived in 1518 and they were received peacefully by the Maya of Cozumel. The inhabitants of the island continued to help the Spanish re-supply their ships with food and water so they could continue their voyages.

It is a popular stop for cruise ships. We visited here in 2003, October 7, 2021, March 15, 2022, November 24, 2023 , January 2, 2025, and again in January, 2026. On our first trip, we docked at the cruise ship terminal about 2 miles south of downtown and had to take a taxi each way to visit downtown. We also took an excursion to Rancho Buenavista where we went horseback riding.

On our second trip and on our most recent trip we docked downtown which was great. Ferries travel regularly between Cozumel and Playa del Carmen on the mainland. We like to shop in the flea market and to have lunch at the Thirty Cougar.

On our third trip, we took an excursion to El Cedral where we took a UTV trip through the jungle to Cenote Chempita which is home to thousands of bats.

On our fourth visit, we took a buggy tour around the island and then went for a ride in a glass bottom boat over the reefs.

On our fifth visit, a ship had damaged the pier a week before our arrival and the seas were too high for tendering, so the captain aborted our trip and we had an extra sea day instead.

Cozumel is a popular tourist destination known for its beautiful beaches, clear turquoise waters, and vibrant coral reefs, making it a top spot for snorkeling and scuba diving. The island has a rich history, and there are several ancient Mayan ruins on the island, including the San Gervasio Mayan Ruins, which are one of the most important Mayan archaeological sites in Mexico.

Cozumel is also home to a bustling downtown area with a variety of shopping, dining, and nightlife options. The island has a laid-back atmosphere, and its people are known for their warm hospitality and friendly demeanor. Whether you are looking for adventure, relaxation, or simply to soak up some sun, Cozumel has something to offer for everyone.
