The volcano itself is a massive 10,233 foot shield volcano that forms more than 75% of the island of Maui in Hawaii. The name Haleakala originates from the Hawaiian legend that the demigod Maui imprisoned the Sun there in order to lengthen the day. Haleakala is one of the largest volcanic craters in the world. In places, the rim of the crater rises more than 2,500 feet above the crater floor.

We visited the Halekala Volcano National Park on 12/18/2023. While there we walked down into the crater and then to the top of White Hill which provides a panoramic view of the area.

The Haleakala volcano is the only active volcano on Maui. It has produced numerous eruptions in the last 30,000 years, including ten eruptions in the past 1,000 years and at least one in the last 600 years. The western 25% of the island of Maui is formed by another volcano, Mauna Kahalawai which are referred to today as the West Maui Mountains.
