What to see and do at Ilha Grande, Brazil

Ilha Grande is a beautiful island located off the coast of Rio de Janeiro state in Brazil

It is known for its stunning beaches, lush forests, and relaxed atmosphere. Ilha Grande is located about 90 miles south of Rio de Janeiro, and is accessible only by boat. The island was once used as a quarantine station for immigrants and later as a high-security prison, but is now a popular tourist destination.

On 3/16/2023, we visited Ilha Grande by tender from the Norwegian Star.  We spent the day on the 17 mile long island which is a UNESCO world heritage site. Hiked 5 miles thru the jungle and then visited 5 of its 105 beaches by boat.  It's a beautiful place. 86% of the island is protected from development.

Ilha Grande is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in Brazil, including Lopes Mendes, considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Other popular beaches on the island include Praia do Aventureiro, Praia de Palmas, and Praia de Lagoa Azul.  The island is also has several hiking trails, including the Pico do Papagaio trail, which takes you to the highest point on the island and offers stunning views. The mountains reach 3,383 ft. Ilha Grande is home to a variety of wildlife, including monkeys, birds, and sea turtles.

The island has a laid-back, relaxed vibe and is a popular destination for tourists looking to escape the hustle and bustle.
