What to see and do in Livingston, Guatemala

Livingston is a coastal town located in the northeastern part of Guatemala, near the border with Belize.

 It is known for its Afro-Caribbean culture, which is unique in Guatemala, and its beautiful natural surroundings, including the lush tropical rainforests of the Rio Dulce National Park and the Caribbean Sea.

On 3/29/2018, we traveled from the port at Puerto Barrios by a small boat across Amatique Bay to the town of Livingston.  It is a fishing village that sits at the mouth of the Rio Dulce river.

The town was founded by English-speaking Caribbean settlers in the 19th century and has maintained a distinct Afro-Caribbean culture, with a mix of English, Spanish, and indigenous languages spoken by its residents. This is reflected in its architecture, music, and cuisine, which features dishes such as rice and beans, coconut rice, and seafood.

Livingston is a popular destination for tourists seeking a unique cultural experience, as well as for adventure and eco-tourists who come to explore the nearby national park and enjoy activities such as kayaking, boating, and hiking. The town is also known for its vibrant music scene, with genres like reggae, calypso, and punta being popular among locals and visitors alike.
