What to see and do in Miraflores, Panama

The Miraflores Locks are part of the Panama Canal, a man-made waterway that connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean.

The locks are located in the Miraflores district of Panama City and they serve to raise and lower ships as they pass through the canal. The Miraflores locks and Pedro Miguel locks are located at the Pacific end of the Panama Canal.   

On 4/22/2016. we visited the Miraflores visitor center, where we watch ships being raised and lowered thru the locks. 

The Miraflores Locks consist of a system of two chambers, each with its own set of gates. Ships enter the first chamber, where they are raised or lowered to the level of the next chamber before passing through the second set of gates into the next chamber. The entire process takes about an hour and is completed without the use of locks, which helps to conserve water.

The Miraflores Locks are an engineering marvel and a popular tourist attraction. Visitors can watch ships passing through the locks from a viewing platform, and there is also a museum on site that provides information about the history and operation of the canal.

The Panama Canal is one of the most important shipping routes in the world, and the Miraflores Locks play a crucial role in ensuring the safe and efficient passage of ships through the canal.
