Prince Christian Sound in Greenland is a Spectacular Fjord Flanked by Glaciers and Steep, Rugged Mountains
Prince Christian Sound (Ikerasassuaq) is a spectacular fjord in southern Greenland, known for its dramatic scenery, towering cliffs, glaciers, and icebergs. It separates the mainland of Greenland from the islands of the southern archipelago, particularly Cape Farewell, which is the southernmost point of Greenland.
The sound is named after Prince Christian, who later became King Christian VIII of Denmark. It has been known to European explorers since the early expeditions to Greenland.
The fjord runs for about 65 miles, connecting the Labrador Sea to the Irminger Sea on the other side. It is flanked by steep, rugged mountains that can rise as high as 4,000 feet. The fjord is dotted with glaciers that reach down into the water, calving icebergs that float along the sound. The fjord remains navigable during the summer months when the ice is broken up by the warmer weather. However, in winter, it can become blocked by sea ice, and travel through the sound is often impossible.
We visited Prince Christian Sound on 8/29/2024. Starting in the early morning, we cruised from West to East through the fjord viewing it’s four major glaciers and numerous waterfalls as we passed icebergs in the narrow passage.
The narrow fjord is famous for its awe-inspiring beauty. The high mountains and cliffs, covered in snow, reflect on the deep blue water. Multiple glaciers feed into the sound, creating a striking contrast between the white ice and the dark water.
Large and small icebergs are a common sight, especially in the summer when glaciers calve into the water. These icebergs slowly drift through the narrow channel, adding to the dramatic vistas. As snow and ice melt, many waterfalls cascade down the cliffs, further enhancing the breathtaking views.
Prince Christian Sound is primarily accessed by boat. During the summer, many cruise ships and private yachts navigate the fjord, offering passengers stunning views of one of Greenland’s most iconic landscapes. The narrowest part of the fjord is just 1,600 feet wide, making for a thrilling experience as large vessels sail through the towering cliffs.
The small settlement of Aappilattoq, with fewer than 100 residents, is located near the western entrance of Prince Christian Sound. This village is remote and traditional, with colorful houses that stand out against the stark natural backdrop. The community relies on hunting and fishing, living a lifestyle deeply connected to the natural environment.
At the southeastern entrance of the sound lies an automated weather station and former settlement, Prins Christian Sund Station, which once housed military personnel but is now uninhabited except for seasonal staff.
