Dynjandi Waterfalls is One of the Most Spectacular and Iconic Waterfalls in Iceland

Dynjandi Waterfalls (also known as Fjallfoss) is one of the most spectacular and iconic waterfalls in Iceland. Located in the Westfjords region, it’s renowned for its dramatic and unique appearance. The waterfalls are located in the Dynjandisvogur fjord, about 19 miles southwest of Ísafjörður, the largest town in the Westfjords. The falls are set against a backdrop of rugged mountains and expansive landscapes.

We visited Isafjordur on 8/25/2024. From there, we took a bus tour through the Westfjords to the Dynjandi waterfalls. When we arrived at the waterfalls, we hiked up to the trail to view the numerous cascades that make up the Dynjandi waterfall system.

Dynjandi has a total height of 328 feet, making it one of the tallest waterfalls in Iceland. The waterfall is renowned for its wide, fan-shaped cascade. It consists of several tiers, each of which contributes to its overall impressive appearance. The water spreads out across a broad, curved front, creating a stunning visual effect.

The primary cascade of Dynjandi, Gongumannafoss, is the most dramatic, with a width of about 98 feet. It flows down in a broad, gentle curve. Above and below the main fall, there are several smaller waterfalls and cascades, which are collectively referred to as Dynjandi’s siblings. These include (from bottom to top) the Bæjarfoss, Kvislarafoss, Hæddafoss, Gongumannafoss, and Hjálparfoss. Each one has its own distinct character and contributes to the overall beauty of the site.

Dynjandi is accessible by car, though the roads leading to it can be challenging due to their narrow and winding nature. The drive from Ísafjörður takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. There is a marked hiking trail leading from the parking area to the base of the waterfall. The trail is relatively short, about 0.6 miles each way, and it includes a series of steps and paths that ascend to the upper falls. The hike offers panoramic views of the surrounding fjords and mountains.
