Akureyri, Iceland is Often Referred to as the “Capital of the North”

Akureyri with a population of about 20,000 people is Iceland's second-largest city, located in the northern part of the country. Often referred to as the “Capital of the North,” is a vibrant hub with a rich cultural scene, beautiful natural surroundings, and a range of activities for visitors.

Akureyri lies on the shore of Eyjafjörður, Iceland’s longest fjord, which extends about 37 miles inland from the coast. The city is set on a flat plain at the base of the Súluheiði mountain range, providing stunning views of the surrounding landscapes. Due to its northern location, Akureyri is a great place to view the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) from late September to early April.

We visited Akureyki on 8/24/2024. While there, we took the Hop On Hop Off tour of the town. Then afterwards, we visited the Akureyri Botanical Gardens, several of its churches, the downtown area and the numerous museums located on the south side of the town.

The historical center of Akureyri features charming wooden houses and well-preserved architecture from the early 20th century, providing a glimpse into the city’s past. Akureyri Church was designed by architect Guðjón Samúelsson, is one of the city’s most prominent landmarks. The church features striking architecture and offers panoramic views of the city from its tower. The Akureyri Art Museum showcases a collection of Icelandic and international art, including contemporary works and historical pieces.

The Akureyri Botanical Gardens are home to a diverse collection of Arctic and alpine plants, including many species native to Iceland. The gardens are beautifully landscaped and open to visitors throughout the year. The nearby Hlíðarfjall ski resort offers skiing, snowboarding, and other winter sports. The resort provides excellent facilities and is known for its well-maintained slopes and scenic views. Akureyri is a popular base for whale watching tours in Eyjafjörður. Tour operators offer trips to spot various species, including humpback whales, minke whales, and occasionally orcas.

The surrounding area offers numerous hiking opportunities, including trails in the nearby Vaðlaheiði and Súlur mountains. The landscape features volcanic formations, lush valleys, and scenic fjord views. Located about an hour's drive from Akureyri, Lake Mývatn is a popular destination known for its unique volcanic landscape, geothermal activity, and birdwatching opportunities. The area includes attractions like the Mývatn Nature Baths and the Dimmuborgir Lava Fields.

Often referred to as the “Waterfall of the Gods,” Goðafoss is a stunning semi-circular waterfall located about 19 miles east of Akureyri. It’s a popular stop on the way to or from Lake Mývatn.
