What to see and do in Sydney, Cape Breton Island, Canada

Sydney has a rich history as a  coal-mining and steel-making center in the 19th and early 20th centuries. 

Sydney is a port city located in Nova Scotia, Canada.  Sydney was the capital of Cape Breton Island until 1820 when it merged with Nova Scotia.   During the world wars, it was a staging area for convoys of ships headed to England.

We visited Sydney on 9/16/2015 and walked through the streets of the city.

It is the largest urban center on Cape Breton Island and the economic engine of the island. Today, the city is a thriving hub of commerce, transportation, and culture, with a growing technology sector and a thriving tourism industry.

Visitors to Sydney can enjoy its beautiful harbor, beaches, and parks, as well as its cultural attractions, such as the Cape Breton Miners' Museum, the Beaton Institute, and the Highland Arts Theatre. The city is also home to several annual festivals, including the Celtic Colours International Festival and the Sydney Ribfest.

Sydney is well-connected to other parts of Nova Scotia and the rest of Canada, with frequent ferry and air services available. The city is also a gateway to the famous Cabot Trail, a scenic drive that offers breathtaking views of the island's rugged coastline and forests.
