What to see and do in Trieste, Italy

Trieste is a city located in northeastern Italy near the border with Slovenia.

It is situated on the Gulf of Trieste, an arm of the Adriatic Sea, and is the capital of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region. Trieste has a rich history and cultural heritage, having been influenced by various peoples and civilizations over the centuries.

We visited Trieste on 10/2/2022. We traveled to the city by train from Venice.  We departed from the city on an MSC  cruise which returned to Trieste at the end of the trip. We once again took the train. From Trieste, we returned to Venice.

Trieste is on a thin 5 mile wide strip of land between the Adriatic sea and the Slovenian border. Croatia is only 19 miles south of the city. Trieste belonged to the Habsburg monarchy from 1382 until 1918 which was one of the Great Powers of Europe and Trieste was its most important seaport.  Italy annexed the city of Trieste at the end of World War I. 

One of the most notable features of Trieste is its beautiful architecture. The city has a mix of different styles, including Baroque, neoclassical, and Art Nouveau. Some of the most famous landmarks in the city include the Piazza Unità d'Italia, which is one of the largest seafront squares in Europe, and the Miramare Castle, a stunning 19th-century castle and gardens located on a promontory overlooking the Adriatic Sea.

Trieste is also known for its vibrant café culture and literary history. The city has a long tradition of hosting intellectuals, writers, and artists, and was once home to several literary salons and cafes frequented by the likes of James Joyce and Italo Svevo.

Additionally, Trieste is a major port city and has a thriving economy. It is home to several important industries, including shipbuilding, steel production, and oil refining. The city also has a busy commercial port, making it an important hub for trade in the region.
