Vieques, Puerto Rico: Pristine Beaches, Wild Horses, and the World’s Brightest Bioluminescent Bay

Vieques, Puerto Rico is one of the Caribbean’s most enchanting island destinations. Located about eight miles east of the Puerto Rican mainland, Vieques offers visitors a quieter and more natural experience compared to the larger cities of the island. We traveled to Vieques by ferry from Ceiba on 3/5/2026. Using a rented golf cart, we traveled around the island visiting numerous beaches, the 400 year old Ceiba tree, the mile long Mosquito pier, Crab Island Rum Distillery, the abandoned munition bunkers, and the town of Esperanza where we had lunch by the ocean. Then took the ferry back to Ceiba.

Vieques is home to Mosquito Bay, widely recognized as the brightest bioluminescent bay in the world. The glowing water is caused by microscopic organisms called dinoflagellates that emit light when disturbed. When boats, kayaks, or even fish move through the water, the bay lights up with an electric blue glow.

Nighttime kayaking tours allow visitors to witness this incredible natural phenomenon up close. The experience of paddling through glowing water under a starry sky is one of the most unforgettable activities in Puerto Rico.

Best Time to Visit Vieques, Puerto Rico

Vieques enjoys warm tropical weather year-round. The best time to visit is during the dry season from December through April, when rainfall is lower and ocean conditions are calm. However, even during the wetter months, showers are typically brief and followed by sunshine.

An overnight stay is required if you plan to visit the bioluminescent bay.
The ferry ride is approximately an hour each way. Only island residents can take their car on the ferry. Parking is available at the ferry terminal.
SUV and golf car rentals are available on the island.
Flights are available to the island from the Ceiba airport.
