Asilah is a city located on the northwest coast of Morocco known for its well-preserved Portuguese fortifications

It is near the city of Tangier and its historic old town contains a well-preserved Portuguese fortification. the town also has a vibrant arts scene. Asilah has a rich cultural heritage, dating back to its origins as a Phoenician settlement in the 9th century BCE. In the 16th century, the city was conquered by the Portuguese, who built the fortifications that were later controlled by the Barbary pirates.

On 5/4/2014, we visited Asilah. We walked through the fort and the old city. The table we sat at in the restaurant that we had lunch is the same one that former President Clinton sat at when he visited here.

In the 20th century, Asilah became a popular artists' colony, attracting painters and writers from around the world. Today, Asilah is a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors with its picturesque old town, its beautiful beaches, and its bustling markets. The city also holds an annual arts festival, which features performances and exhibitions by local and international artists.

Whether you're interested in history, culture, or the arts, Asilah is definitely worth a visit. Just be sure to bring your sunscreen, as the city is located on the sunny coast of Morocco!
