What to see and do in Chefchaouen, Morocco

Chefchaouen is a city located in the Rif Mountains of northwest Morocco and is known for its distinctive blue-painted buildings 

It is a popular tourist destination. The blue color is believed to have been introduced by Jewish refugees who settled in the city in the 1930s. The color is said to symbolize the sky and heaven and is believed to bring peace and relaxation to those who visit the city.

On 5/2/2014, we visited Chefchaouen. We walked the streets of the town and then hiked up the mountainside overlooking the city. After leaving the town we went hiking in the mountains to see the waterfalls at Akchour.  and then drove along the coast back to M'diq where we were staying.

Chefchaouen is surrounded by mountains and is known for its scenic beauty, making it a popular destination for outdoor activities such as hiking and exploring the surrounding countryside. The city is also famous for its local crafts, including textiles, woven goods, and hand-painted ceramics.

In addition to its natural beauty and unique architecture, Chefchaouen is also known for its lively markets and traditional food. Visitors can sample traditional Moroccan dishes such as tajines, couscous, and mint tea, as well as fresh fruits and vegetables grown in the surrounding fertile valleys.
