What to see and do in Beaumaris, Wales

Beaumaris is a town on the east coast of the Isle of Anglesey, in North Wales

It is situated on the banks of the Menai Strait which is a tidal waterway separating Anglesey from the coast of North Wales.  It was originally a Viking settlement known as Porth y Wygyr (Port of the Vikings). 

We visited Beaumaris on 6/14/2022.   While there we walked the downtown area and saw Beaumaris Castle and the Menai Strait.

The town is known for its historic Beaumaris Castle, which was built by Edward I of England in the late 13th century as part of his campaign to conquer North Wales. The castle is considered one of the finest examples of medieval military architecture in Europe, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The castle is surrounded by a moat and is designed to be impregnable, with features such as multiple layers of walls, towers, and gatehouses.

In addition to its castle, Beaumaris is also known for its Georgian architecture, which is particularly prominent on the town's seafront. The town has a number of historic buildings, including the 14th-century St Mary's Church, which contains a number of interesting features such as a rood screen, a medieval pulpit, and a rare double piscina.

Today, Beaumaris is a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors from all over the world who come to admire its history, architecture, and natural beauty. The town is also home to a number of shops, restaurants, and cafes, making it a lively and vibrant place to visit.

Beaumaris Castle was built as part of Edward I's campaign to conquer north Wales in 1295 following the Madog ap Llywelyn uprising.  UNESCO considers Beaumaris to be one of "the finest examples of late 13th century and early 14th century military architecture in Europe", and it is classed as a World Heritage Site.
