What to see and do in Cartagena, Colombia

Cartagena is a port city on Colombia’s Caribbean coast.  

It is a major tourist destination known for its rich history, stunning colonial architecture, and vibrant culture. By the sea is the walled old town, founded in 1533, with squares, cobblestone streets and colorful colonial buildings. The historic center is surrounded by 6.5 miles of defensive walls.  Puerta del Reloj is the main gate into the old town. Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas is a large fort just outside the walled city.

On 4/23/2016, we traveled from the port to the old town by bus.  We walked the streets of the old town and enjoyed lunch there. Afterwards, we took a boat back to the port. 

The city was founded in 1533 by Spanish conquistador Don Pedro de Heredia and served as a major port for the Spanish Empire's trade in the New World. As a result, Cartagena has a rich history, much of which can still be seen in its well-preserved colonial-era buildings and fortifications. The old town, known as "La Ciudad Amurallada" (The Walled City), is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a popular tourist attraction.

In addition to its historical significance, Cartagena is also known for its gorgeous beaches, lively nightlife, and delicious cuisine. Visitors can explore the city's many museums, sample local seafood dishes, or simply relax in a cafe and soak up the city's lively atmosphere.

Santuario de San Pedro Claver was built in 1580.  At its altar lie the remains of Saint Peter Claver, who died in 1654 in Cartagena.
