Hikinaakala Heiau temple was constructed in the 13th century in Kauai, Hawaii

The Hikinaakala Heiau temple is located in the Lydgate Beach Park. Hikinaakala means rising of the sun, and heiau translates into temple in the Hawaiian language. It is estimated that this temple was constructed in the 13th century. The only remnants that remain of the original structure are the stone walls which are 6 ft. high and 11 ft. wide. The entire site sits on an acre of land near the mouth of the Wailua River.

Lydgate Beach Park is located on the East side of Kauai adjacent to the Wailua River and the town of Wailua. There are wo rock-enclosed ponds in the park that create a safe haven from the open ocean waves for swimming. Small reef fish enter into the pond through the crevices in the rocks.

We visited the temple and park on 12/22/2023. Here, we explored the temple and walked on the beach.
