Puerto Madryn is home to the many natural attractions on the South Atlantic coast of Argentina
Puerto Madryn is located in the Golfo Nuevo, which is formed by the Península Valdés and the Punta Ninfas. It is an important center for tourists visiting the natural attractions of the Península Valdés and the South Atlantic coast. The area around Puerto Madryn has a cold desert climate with only 6" to 8" of rain per year.
We visited Puerto Madryn on 1/24/2024. While there, we toured the town and visited the seal colony at Punta Loma. As the ship entered the bay, we saw a southern right whale from the promenade deck but were not able to get a picture of it.
Puerto Madryn was founded on July 28, 1865, when 150 Welsh immigrants arrived aboard the clipper Mimosa. They named the port, Porth Madryn, in honor of Sir Love Jones-Parry's estate in Wales which was called Madryn. It is the Welsh name for Saint Materiana. The settlement grew as a result of the building of the Central Chubut Railway by Welsh, Spanish, and Italian immigrants who then settled in the area. The Welsh settlers established numerous sheep ranches in the area.
