What to see and do at Waikiki, Oahu, Hawaii

Waikiki is a popular resort area and beach in Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii

Honolulu is the capital city of Hawaii. It is famous for its surfing culture, its history as a royal retreat, and its many hotels and resorts. Waikiki means “spouting fresh water” in Hawaiian, because of the springs and streams that used to exist there.

We visited Waikiki on 12/13/2023 through 12/16/2023.  While there, we stayed at the Sheraton Princess Kaiulani hotel. It is located across the street from the beach and close to the major shopping area in Waikiki.  While staying here, we rented a car for two days to visit the rest of the island.

Other popular hotels in the area include the Royal Hawaiian, a historic luxury hotel that opened in 1927. It is known as the “Pink Palace of the Pacific” and has hosted many celebrities and dignitaries. Also, the Hilton Hawaiian Village, which is a large resort complex that features five swimming pools, a lagoon, a spa, and a variety of restaurants and shops.

Kapiolani Park, a public park that offers recreational facilities, a zoo, an aquarium, and a bandstand. It is also the site of many cultural events and festivals.

Waikiki is a vibrant and active place that reflects the spirit and culture of Hawaii. It is a must-see destination for anyone who visits the island of Oahu.

Waikiki Beach, a popular spot for surfing, swimming, and sunbathing. It is composed of several smaller beaches, such as Duke’s Beach, Kuhio Beach, and Queen’s Surf Beach.

The Duke Kahanamoku Statue, a bronze sculpture that honors the legendary Hawaiian surfer and Olympic champion. He is considered the “father of modern surfing” and taught many visitors how to surf in Waikiki.

Numerous statues are along the beach at Waikiki.

Kalakaua Avenue is the main street through Waikiki.
